Lützow barracks

Location of the Lützow barracks in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Lützow barracks is located in the Handorf district of Münster . It was named after Major General Ludwig Adolf Freiherr von Lützow .

history

In the 1930s, the city of Münster, with the help of the Province of Westphalia in Handorf, began building the Münster-Handorf Airport . During the Second World War , the airport was used by various units of the Air Force . After the end of the Second World War, the British confiscated the site and housed refugees in the buildings that had not been destroyed. In 1956 the construction of the Lützow barracks began. In March 1959 the Bundeswehr moved into the first building of the new barracks . Also in 1959, a Nike defense post of the Dutch Air Force was stationed on parts of the former airport site . After the Nike defensive position withdrew in the 1980s, the Bundeswehr took over the area and the Lützow barracks was expanded.

The 193 Panzer Grenadier Battalion, the 194 Panzer Battalion and the 1959 Panzer Artillery Battalion of the 19 Armored Grenadier Brigade were the first to move into the barracks. The 7th anti-aircraft battalion was also stationed in the barracks until 1972. In 1962 the Panzerjägerkompanie 190 was stationed in Handorf near Münster. Army Aviation Command 1 was also stationed in the barracks from 1970 to 1984 . The barracks also housed the repair company 190 (set up in 1959 as 3rd / supply battalion 196). All the troops stationed in the barracks were disbanded after German reunification . From 1992 the Army NCO School I (HUS I) was housed in the Lützow barracks, which in 2003 was transferred to teaching group B of the Army NCO School .

In 2016, teaching group B of the Army NCO School at the Delitzsch site was combined with teaching groups A and C. With that, the school left the Lützow barracks. A plan to build a correctional facility on the barracks site was rejected in 2015.
