LDK Solar Co. Ltd. headquartered in Jiangxi Province in China, was a manufacturer of photovoltaic products and temporarily the world's largest manufacturer of wafers .

LDK Solar has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2007 . In April 2016, a Cayman Islands court ordered the company's liquidation.

history

LDK Solar Co. Ltd. was founded in 2005 by Xiaofeng Peng (* 1975). Peng invested $ 30 million of his own assets in the company when it was founded. LDK was the first Chinese company to manufacture wafers.

In 2010, the company had the largest capacity growth in the global solar industry (1.3 GW). In March 2011, LDK Solar took over 70% of the US company Solar Power, Inc. and thus gained direct access to the US market.

On December 31, 2011, LDK Solar submitted a takeover offer for the German company Sunways . In January 2013, LDK held around 71% of the shares in Sunways. The preliminary insolvency proceedings against Sunways were opened on May 7, 2013.

Several other Chinese and foreign subsidiaries of LDK also had to file for bankruptcy between 2013 and 2015. In April 2016 the liquidation of the parent company LDK Solar Co. Ltd. arranged.

Products

LDK covered all steps of the value chain in photovoltaics with its own production via subsidiaries:

  • Ingots & Wafer ( Jiangxi LDK Hi-Tech ): With an annual capacity of 3 GW, LDK was the world's largest manufacturer of wafers in the photovoltaic sector in 2010 with a market share of around 20%. In 2016, the share of the world market was less than 5%.
  • Modules: Since the beginning of 2010, LDK has been producing its own photovoltaic modules and selling them mainly in Europe and the USA. The production capacity was 2.5 GW.
  • Silicon ( Jiangxi LDK PV Silicon ): Our own silicon production facility was completed in 2009 at the Xinyu site . In 2016 the capacity was put at 10,000 t / year.
  • Cells ( LDK Solar Hi-Tech ): In August 2010 the company started manufacturing its own solar cells . The production capacity was expanded to 1.26 GW by the end of 2011. In 2016, the company's production capacity for solar cells was around 300 MW.
