The LGV Fresh Vegetables Vienna is a Founded in 1946, the cooperative based in Vienna.

LGV fresh vegetables are supplied by around 110 gardeners in Vienna and Lower Austria . This is around 52,000 tons of vegetables annually , which are then delivered to the branches of the largest Austrian retail companies REWE , Spar and Hofer , but also to large Viennese markets such as the Naschmarkt , the Rochusmarkt and the Viktor-Adler-Markt.

The export share could be reduced by 1.3% to 5.4% in 2012. The main sales countries for export are Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and the Netherlands.

history

Due to the poor supply and sales situation of the Viennese farms in the interwar period, the "Vegetable Sales Cooperative of Viennese Gardeners" was founded in 1930, the predecessor of today's LGV fresh vegetables. In 1939 the cooperative was dissolved again and replaced by district tax offices, or "BAST" for short. In 1946 the "Agricultural Vegetable and Fruit Processing Cooperative for Vienna and the Surrounding Area" was founded, as it still exists today under the name "LGV-Frischgemüse Wien" (Agricultural Vegetable Processing Cooperative), which was changed in 1979.

Difficult crises so far have been the heating oil shock in 1973, when many nurseries closed forever, and the Chernobyl catastrophe in 1986. Due to the radiation, 15,000 tons of vegetables were unsaleable. Only after two weeks could the vegetables from the protected cultivation be released again through strict controls.

Austria's accession to the EU in 1995 also meant a change for the LGV. With import protection regulations no longer applicable and sales dropping by 30%, the company faced an enormous challenge.

Numerous certifications were carried out between 2001 and 2004. From certification through the ISO 9001 quality management system and the HACCP hygiene management system to receiving the AMA seal of approval for LGV fresh vegetables in Vienna and certification according to IFS / Food (International Featured Standard / Food).

In 2006, Gerald König took over the position of board member from Karl Nehammer, who retired after 30 years as sole director.

One of the biggest crises the LGV has experienced so far was the EHEC scandal in May 2011. Since cucumbers were initially suspected of transmitting the dangerous bacteria, 1.6 million cucumbers could not be sold. When the cause, contaminated sprouts from Germany, was clarified, however, consumers' trust in the local vegetables quickly returned.

range

The range of LGV consists of around 40 varieties of vegetables and herbs that are grown in the approximately 110 gardeners plants in Vienna and Lower Austria. The largest share of production take cucumbers , tomatoes , peppers and salads , which all include the AMA - seal of quality are provided.

Cultivation criteria

The same quality requirements apply to all suppliers of LGV fresh vegetables, which are promoted by environmentally friendly economic methods such as integrated production , contemporary culture processes, modern air conditioning in the greenhouses and beneficial insects - instead of using chemicals. In cooperation with the municipality of Vienna, the soil, water, air and plants in the horticultural areas are continuously examined for pollutants. Controls on delivery to LGV and ongoing spot checks of the ingredients as well as a closed cold chain from delivery are also part of quality assurance.

Business premises

LGV-Frischgemüse has two large production facilities which are used for the storage, sorting, packaging and loading of the vegetables. One is located at the headquarters in Simmering , where a 40,000 m² warehouse was opened in 1996. This includes, among other things, eight large-capacity cool boxes with a total of 1,800 m², 18,000 m² of air-conditioned storage and sorting space as well as 22 docking stations for refrigerated trucks. The second facility is located in Raasdorf near Vienna.
