Rewe International is a public company with headquarters in Wiener Neudorf . The company goes back to the Billa Group founded in 1953 and is part of the Rewe Group . Rewe International has around 4,000 branches in Austria, Italy and eight other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. In the Austrian home market, Rewe International is the market leader in food retail and one of the largest companies in the country. The company currently employs around 80,000 people. In the 2016 financial year, the company generated 12.72 billion euros, which corresponds to around 30% of group sales.

history

In 1953 Karl Wlaschek opened a perfumery in Vienna. In 1960 the company expanded its range to include groceries, which formed the basis for further expansion. In the decades that followed, Wlaschek created Austria's largest retail group under the Billa umbrella . This stock corporation has been a joint stock company since the 1970s, and the first branch abroad was opened in 1990. In order to force international expansion, the Rewe Group bought the company in mid-1996. Both the Libro book and stationery store and the real estate company Billareal were excluded. It was still the largest retail takeover in Europe since the fall of the Iron Curtain . The EU Commission allowed the Rewe Group to buy Billa because this did not lead to an addition of market shares regardless of market power.

The Rewe Group then expanded its Austrian subsidiary into a hub for supermarkets in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2009 the business areas for the full range in Austria, Italy and Eastern Europe were combined in a new international business unit. From then on, the company was responsible for the entire full-range business of the Rewe Group outside of Germany. It was renamed Rewe International and received an expanded board. In addition to the topic of sustainability, the focus in recent years has been on the integration of the Adeg trading company and the expansion in electronic commerce . At the beginning of 2017, the locations of the discount retailer Penny in Central and Eastern Europe previously managed from Germany also came under the umbrella of Rewe International.

structure

Rewe International is a stock corporation under Austrian law. The share capital is 2.2 million euros, divided into 22 no-par shares . The company is represented by a board of directors consisting of up to six people. The committee has been chaired by Frank Hensel since 2008.

Rewe International is represented in Bulgaria, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Hungary. The company includes the trading companies Adeg , Billa , Bipa , Merkur and Penny . The company is also involved in the Vorarlberg grocery chain Sutterlüty . Rewe International's own brands include Clever , Hofstädter and Ja! Of course . In addition to food retailing, Rewe International is also active in tourism, including the ITS Billa Reisen and Jahn Reisen brands .

criticism

In 2013 the Vienna Cartel Court imposed the second highest antitrust penalty in the history of Austria against Rewe International. The reason for this was agreements on retail prices and campaign periods with suppliers from the beer and dairy industries. The company emphasized that consumers were not harmed by this.

In 2013, the environmental protection organization Global 2000 criticized the use of hormonal chemicals in personal care products. Two private labels from Rewe International were also affected. The company emphasized that stricter criteria than those stipulated by law have already been set, but are still converting the range as a precaution.
