The Ns 1 are narrow-gauge diesel locomotives for industrial and field railways . The locomotives were built by Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg (LKM) for gauges from 485 to 600 mm.

history

Ns 1 with driver's cab

In the course of the streamlining of tasks in the industry, LKM had to take over the production of the DL 1 / DE 1 from VEB Armaturen- und Apparatebau (AAB) Halle in 1952 . LKM was less than happy about this, as they were planning their own 15 hp locomotive. For this reason, the first locomotives were given the designation Ns 0, as they wanted to keep the designation Ns 1 free for their own locomotive. The first Ns 1 had only minor changes compared to the DL 1. From the 86th locomotive, the change of direction was no longer actuated via the handwheel for gear selection, but via a lever next to the gearbox. From 1956 the locomotives were equipped with an electrical system (lighting, starter). A driver's cab was available on request. In 1954 and 1955, a 15 hp Nsg 1 mine locomotive was developed and built. It remained with a prototype. In 1955, the development and construction of the planned 15 hp locomotive, the Ns 1 a, began. It was completely different from the previously built Ns 1. A water-cooled single - cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of type 1 NVD 18 SRW from the VEB engine factory in Cunewalde was installed. Due to the elaborate production, there were only 21 units. From 1958 the Ns 1 b was built as a further development of the Ns 1. It had an electrical system. The battery required for this was housed in a compartment in the front left of the frame. A total of 686 copies of the Ns 1 and the Ns 1 b were produced.
