The LKM N2 is a standard-gauge diesel locomotive type that was developed for industrial and connecting railways. The locomotives were built between 1951 and 1952 by VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx (LKM) in Babelsberg .

history

The locomotives were a new design in a welded design and the smallest machines in standard gauge that were built by the LKM. Their shape largely corresponded to the pre-war small locomotives of performance group I of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . It is not known exactly how many locomotives of this type were built. So far, only eleven vehicles that were delivered to industrial companies in the GDR could be verified. Three N2s have been preserved to this day. One is from the Historische Feldbahn Dresden e. V. , another is with the Magdeburg Railway Friends and the third locomotive is in the care of the Saxon Railway Museum in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf.

technology

The locomotives have an outer frame in a welded construction and have an open end driver's cab that is accessed via a one or two-step ladder. A water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine is installed under the half-height engine front. It generates an output of 22 kW (30 HP), which is transmitted to the two axles via a mechanical two-speed gearbox and roller chains. This enables the locomotives to reach a speed of 14 km / h. You can brake with the help of a mechanical foot brake that acts on both sets of wheels.
