The LKM N3 is a standard gauge diesel locomotive that was developed for shunting tasks and connection operations. The locomotives were built between 1952 and 1956 by VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx (LKM) in Babelsberg .

history

The locomotives were a new design by LKM, but their shape largely corresponded to the pre-war small locomotives of performance group II of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . 110 locomotives of this type were built in the factory in Potsdam-Babelsberg. The vehicles were mainly delivered to industrial companies in the GDR . A part was also exported, e.g. B. to China , Poland or Hungary . At least two locomotives were delivered to the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), where they were included in the number range of small locomotives from 1958 (Kö, from 1970 series 100 ). A number of N3s were converted into electric towing vehicles (ESF) in the GDR and used specifically at loading facilities.

Some examples of the N3 have survived to this day, for example the 100 955-4. It is in the care of the Thuringian Railway Association in Weimar .

technology

The locomotives have an outer frame and ex works have an open end driver's cab that can be entered at ground level. Later, some vehicles were fitted with side doors as weather protection. A water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine with an output of 44 kW (60 hp) is installed in the front of the engine. The power is transmitted to the two axles via a mechanical four-speed gearbox and roller chains. The locomotives can thus reach a speed of 30 km / h. You can brake using a mechanical foot brake that acts on both axles and has a braked weight of 9 t. The machines have an operating weight of 11 t, which can be increased to 15 t with the help of additional weights.
