The Ns 2 were narrow-gauge diesel locomotives for industrial and field railways . The locomotives were built by Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg (LKM) for gauges from 485 to 760 mm.

Versions

Ns 2

After the Second World War, many cities were badly damaged and industry was busy with reparations claims. There was also a great need for narrow-gauge industrial locomotives for field railways, which were mainly used to clear rubble and rebuild industry and cities. VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx, which at that time still belonged to VVB LOWA , put together a range of types with four performance classes (15, 30, 60 and 90 hp) for narrow and standard gauge, which was supposed to plug the most urgent holes. As the first locomotive of this program, LKM presented the type Ns 2 at the Leipzig spring fair in 1950. This locomotive has a 30 hp (22 kW) diesel engine of the 16 V 2 type, which drives the two axles via a two-speed gearbox with two multi-disc dry clutches and two roller chain drives with roller chains . The locomotive has no electrical system and is designed for gauges from 500 to 760 mm. It was built from 1950 to 1951.

Ns 2 f

The staff was dissatisfied with the Ns 2 because the multi-disc dry clutches quickly wore out and the drive chain had to be constantly retightened. In addition, the top speed of 8 km / h was very tight. For this reason LKM developed the Ns 2 f and presented the locomotive with the serial number 48318 at the Leipzig trade fair in 1952 (see photo above right). In contrast to the Ns 2, the axles are driven via coupling rods. The transmission received multi-disc wet clutches for the first two gears and a third gear with a multi-disc dry clutch for speeds of up to 14 km / h. The locomotives were equipped with the water-cooled 16 V 2 engine. When there were no more spare parts for this motor, air-cooled motors of the type EM 2-15 KVD 14.5 and similar types were installed. The locomotive has an electrical system and is designed for gauges from 485 to 630 mm. 550 copies were made from 1952 to 1959. It was one of the most widespread light rail locomotives in the GDR.

Ns 2 k

In 1955 and 1956, LKM built a total of three locomotives of the Ns 2 k type for gauges over 630 mm (600–760 mm). In contrast to the Ns 2 f, it has a wider frame. Due to the small number of locomotives produced, at least two Ns 2 f were re-gauged by the respective companies on 750 mm gauge themselves. Two of the locomotives built by LKM have survived.

Ns 2 h

With the Ns 2 h, what was particularly required for export was implemented. This means that the locomotive was designed for gauges from 600 to 760 mm and had a driver's cab (which could be heated on request). The frame was longer and wider than that of the Ns 2 f and the superstructures were angular. 197 units were built between 1952 and 1959.

Ns 2 a to Ns 2 e

The types Ns 2 a to Ns 2 e were sub-series of the Ns 2:

  • Ns 2 a, built in 1951, track width 485–610 mm, without electrical system
  • Ns 2 b, built in 1951, track width 750–910 mm, without electrical system
  • Ns 2 c, year of construction 1952, gauge 750–910 mm, with electrical system
  • Ns 2 d, built in 1951, track width 600–760 mm, with electrical system
  • Ns 2 e, years of construction 1951–1952, track width 485–610 mm, with electrical system

A total of 509 copies were built with the Ns 2.

Nsg 2

LKM Ns 2g

LKM developed the Nsg 2 for use in mining in 1951. The first prototype was still equipped with the EM 2-15 KVD 14.5 motor. However, since this was not suitable for underground operation, an EM 2-25 engine was installed from 1952, which was started with compressed air. Around 48 copies were built by 1954. In 1952 four locomotives of the type Nsg 2a were built. This had an EM 4-15 engine throttled to 30 HP (22 kW), which was also started with compressed air. In 1953 (?) Four Nsg 2 M models were produced for the Mansfeld Combine. All three types of locomotives were designed for gauges from 500 to 630 mm and protected against firedamp. The photo shows the first prototype.
