An LTE modem is a peripheral device that uses a SIM card to establish a connection between a computer and the Internet service provider using the LTE cellular network. It is the technological successor to the UMTS modem .

General

Some notebooks have an LTE modem in the form of a PCIe module. External LTE modems are available as USB sticks ("LTE stick" or "LTE surf stick"), as mobile WLAN routers (e.g. Telekom Speedbox LTE mini) or as stationary routers (e.g. FRITZ! Box ) available.

LTE modems are usually connected directly to the notebook. Some DSL routers can also be supplemented with LTE modems, as was already possible with UMTS modems.

The speed depends on the network availability, the connection quality and the agreed tariff. Theoretically, up to 150 Mbit / s downstream and 50 Mbit / s upstream are currently possible.

Most LTE modems can also handle the previous standards ( GSM and UMTS ).

USB models

LTE USB sticks from Telefónica , Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom

LTE modems in the form of USB sticks are mainly sold under their own names in Germany by the mobile communications providers Telefónica , Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom . The actual manufacturers are Huawei , ZTE and Alcatel . There are also u. a. Models from Huawei (under its own name) or devices from 4G systems or option . Many devices are based on chips from Qualcomm .

The devices usually have suitable drivers and software for connection control for Windows and Mac OS X with them. Appropriate kernel modules and software (ModemManager / NetworkManager ) are available for Linux systems .

A selection of LTE USB sticks sold in Germany can be found in the following table. All devices listed here are SIM lock-free and work with mini SIM . A "No" for IPv6 support only reflects the official sources (manufacturer statements, data sheet). The devices can still be IPv6-capable.

LTE routers differ from LTE sticks in that they often have more powerful hardware installed, offer more functions and have their own power supply. Compared to LTE sticks, LTE routers can be operated as independent devices and do not have to be connected to a computer via USB beforehand. LTE routers also have a slot to accommodate a SIM card. The Internet connection of the SIM card used is provided to other devices by an LTE router via WLAN. Some LTE routers also offer the option of connecting devices via an RJ45 connection using a network cable. There are LTE routers for mobile use that have a built-in battery and can be operated without a power connection.

A selection of LTE routers sold in Germany can be found in the following table.

Alternatives

As an alternative to an LTE modem, the Internet connection can be established using a mobile phone (see tethering , hotspot ).
