LUPUS - Institute for Wolf Monitoring and Research in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LUPUS - Institute for Wolf Monitoring and Research in Germany is a research facility based in Spreewitz . It was founded in January 2003 as the LUPUS Wildlife Biology Office by the biologists Gesa Kluth and Ilka Reinhardt and is still managed by them today (2015). The main area of work is the scientific support and research of the natural repopulation of Germany by the wolf . LUPUS works on behalf of the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture and is supported by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation , the Federal Forests division of the Federal Agency for Real Estate and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) .

Work areas

The wildlife biology office LUPUS has, among other things, drawn up the “Technical Concept for Wolf Management in Germany” on behalf of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) . It organizes and leads the wolf monitoring in Saxony and in the south of Brandenburg as well as in Saxony-Anhalt .

The scientific work of the Büro zum Wolf includes, among other things, the inventory, for example using photo traps, trace monitoring, telemetry , food analysis and genetic examinations. Since 2003 wolves in Lusatia have been equipped with collar transmitters in order to research the use of the territory, way of life and spread; In January 2011 the project was extended to Saxony-Anhalt .

LUPUS also works with other institutions to provide professional information to the population. The integration of wolves in their habitat and their acceptance by the population are supported. Advice to those affected in agriculture, such as sheep farmers, and on-site meetings with the population are intended to reduce the fear of the wolf and enable peaceful coexistence between wolf and human.

reception

The work of LUPUS is regularly discussed in the media. With some of the hunters, the return of the wolf meets with rejection, which is also directed against the staff of the institute.
