La Caille is an impact crater in the southwest of the lunar front , east of Mare Nubium , northeast of Purbach crater and northwest of Blanchinus .
The rim of the crater is heavily eroded, the interior is flooded by lava and is flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille .
South of La Caille, when the moon is around 6.7 days, shortly before reaching the first quarter of the moon , the visual effect Lunar X can be observed on the lunar terminator .
