description
The place is located 50 km south of Olbia , 56 km northeast of Nuoro and 7 km northeast of the main town Siniscola. It is located on the east coast of Sardinia. Well known is the 10 km long, white beach of La Caletta, which extends to Santa Lucia .
Besides fishing, the inhabitants live mainly from tourism; During the holiday season, up to 10,000 people stay in La Caletta.
The name Caletta is derived from the Italian cala or caletta = small bay . It means a small harbor or bay sheltered from the wind. The ending -etta is used here as a diminutive and is often found in city names from the Mediterranean region.
The inhabitants refer to themselves as Calettiani .
On the coast in front of La Caletta there is a Saracen tower ("Torre di San Giovanni"), which was built in 1606 to protect the port of La Caletta. Together with the church of San Giovanni di Posada , it forms an ensemble of buildings that has been identified as particularly worthy of protection in the context of regional landscape planning.
