San Giovanni di Posada (Latin: Portus Luguidonis or Portus Liquidonis ) is a district of Posada , Sardinia , Italy , on the Tyrrhenian coast (east coast) of the island in the province of Nuoro .

history

Formerly known as "Porto di Posada" (Port of Posada), the district was transformed into an elegant holiday resort in the 1970s. The small church, dedicated to St. John, is located directly on the beach and, inconspicuous from the outside, is one of the attractions of the place. It was built at the end of the first half of the nineteenth century (before 1847).

The history of the place goes back to the Roman port (original name "Portus Luguidonis"), which was located in the small bay, directly in front of the church. From here the Romans conquered the interior of Sardinia. All goods to and from Rome went through the port of San Giovanni, but all goods were carried by smaller ships directly to Olbia (approx. 50 kilometers north). The traffic was probably immense, Sardinia's nickname “the granary of Rome” also came from this time. As part of the redesign and orientation towards tourism, the port was relocated to La Caletta as a modern marina a few kilometers south .

On the coast in front of La Caletta, not far from San Giovanni, there is a Saracen tower ("Torre di San Giovanni"), which was built in 1606 to protect the port of La Caletta. Together with the Church of San Giovanni, it forms an ensemble of buildings that has been identified as particularly worthy of protection as part of regional landscape planning.

It is believed that there was a temple in honor of Feronia , an Etruscan goddess of water, in the immediate vicinity . This would prove the presence of Etruscans in this area at the time of the Nuragic culture , the original population of Sardinia. Similar temples are known on the Italian mainland in at least two places: in Fiano Romano (near Rome) and in Terracina , around 120 kilometers south of Rome.

The region around San Giovanni is one of the most important tourist areas in Sardinia. The approx. 15 km long beach and a system of rivers of ecological importance. Part of this area is currently being converted into a natural park (Parco Fluviale).
