La Destra (German: The Right ) was a right-wing nationalist party founded on July 14, 2007 in Italy , which split off from the Alleanza Nazionale (AN). At times she was also characterized as right-wing extremist . On February 17, 2017, the party was dissolved and transferred to the Movimento Nazionale per la Sovranità , which was officially founded the next day and whose leading figures are Francesco Storace and the former mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno .

history

In the parliamentary elections in 2008 , La Destra joined forces with the neo-fascist Fiamma Tricolore to form a list and put Daniela Santanchè as the top candidate. Storace, who was President of the Lazio Region from 2000 to 2005 , ran for the office of Roman Mayor in the local elections that were taking place at the same time . According to official announcements, Berlusconi's electoral alliance, to which the new formation sees itself in competition, did not want to support La Destra in forming a government, even if the right-wing won a narrow election. However, with 2.4% in the elections to the House of Representatives and 2.1% in the Senate elections, the party failed to make it into both chambers because of the threshold clauses (4 and 8%) and thus lost its influence and significance. In 2009 she achieved 2.2 percent in the European elections in an alliance with the parties Partito Pensionati (PP), Movimento per le Autonomie (MpA) and Alleanza di Centro (AdC) and thus lost her seat in parliament.

ideology

At the initiative of its chairman Francesco Storace, the party tried to create a new political space that clearly refers to the politics and culture of the neo-fascist right since the intended merger of the AN with Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia to Popolo della Libertà (PdL) . The party's political position is already described by the name, which translates as “The Right”. La Destra referred to the old trinity of God, country and family. Accordingly, the party also resorted to the tricolor of Italy as a symbol . Domestically, they attacked immigrants and the banking system, while at the same time trying to promote family values.

The AN was accused by representatives of La Destra of having betrayed its own values, for example by campaigning to make it easier for immigrants to obtain Italian citizenship and the right to vote. In addition, the party did not want to condemn historical fascism as a whole, but refers positively to individual aspects.
