La Ronge ( Town of La Ronge ) is a small town in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan on the edge of the Canadian Shield . It is the principal city in the Saskatchewan Census Division No. 18 , which occupies the entire north of the province.

The name of the city follows that of the adjacent lake Lac la Ronge and is probably derived from the extensive beaver activity found by the French. With the expansion of Prince Albert's Saskatchewan Highway 2 in 1947, the place became a popular fishing tourist destination. In 1976 the place received city rights.

The local La Ronge Ice Wolves team plays ice hockey in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League .
