The Romanesque - Pisan Église de la Trinité et de San Giovanni ( French Église de la Sainte-Trinité et de Saint Jean-Baptiste ) is located in the cemetery of Aregno in the north-west of the island of Corsica .

architecture

The unstructured single-nave church building from the 12th century consists of the nave , which is closed with a wide semicircular apse .

The facade with its polychrome masonry is divided into three sections: The lower part with the portal with its console-supported relief arch, which is emphasized by the alternation of layers of red and gray stones, takes up about half the height of the facade. Two small sculptures, a naked man and a woman, flank the arch. Originally the portal was designed without an arch, which is a rarity in the Romanesque architecture of the island. During a restoration in the 19th century, the arch was replaced by today's monolithic lintel.

Above is a field with four blind arcades set on pilasters . The arches are designed in various types of cornice : knotted cords, stylized flowers worked in relief, surrounded by double circles placed side by side, the others in tooth frieze ornamentation and as a bundle of cords. Once inside each arch there was ceramic jewelry. The capital-like supports of the arches are formed by quadrupeds in bas-relief. In the middle above the arcade a small round window opens .

The tympanum along the gable leg a cornice from corbels supported arcades. There is a central double window. Its arch, decorated with cornice, serves as a roof and protects a bas-relief of a fully plastic male figure above intertwined snakes.

The two side walls are divided into seven fields by six narrow pilasters . They extend from the foundation wall to the arcaded cornice. A knotted cord runs under the roof. The archivolts of the windows (located on the north side) have bas-reliefs.

The semicircular apse still has the original roof covering , made of teghie (shingles made from local stones). The only decoration is the cornice formed by a series of arcades.

Interior

In the interior there are probably frescoes from the 15th century by local artists . The doctors of the church Augustine , Gregory , Hieronymus and Ambrosius and the archangel Michael are shown. An inscription says that the work was carried out on May 17, 1458 and commissioned by Chilardus Manuellis of Sant Antonino.
