The Grandval dam ( French Barrage de Grandval ) is a dam in the Cantal department in France . The dam is the first hydropower plant in the chain of six power plants on the Truyère . The municipality of Saint-Flour is about ten kilometers north of the dam.

Construction work began in July 1955. They were completed in June 1960. The power plant went into operation in 1959. It is owned by Électricité de France (EDF) and is also operated by EDF.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a combination of pillar dam and multiple arch dam with a height of 76 (or 79 or 88) m. The length of the top of the wall is 350 (or 376) m. The volume of the structure is 160,000 (or 190,000) m³. The thickness of the dam is 4.90 m at the base and 3 m at the top.

Reservoir

When fully blocked, the reservoir extends over an area of 11 km² and holds 270.6 million m³ of water - of which 224.6 million m³ can be used to generate electricity. The normal storage target is between 706 and 742 m above sea level .

power plant

The Grandval power plant has an installed capacity of 68 and 74  MW . The average annual production is 125 or 144 million kWh. The power plant's two Francis turbines are located in a machine house at the foot of the dam. They each provide a maximum of 37 MW. The nominal speed of the turbines is 230.5 / min. The maximum height of fall is 79 m. The flow rate is 53 m³ / s (maximum 64.7 m³ / s).

The Grandval power plant is assigned to the control center in Toulouse, one of four EDF control centers in France that are responsible for the control of hydropower plants.
