Lad culture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ׁ Lad culture (or laddish culture and laddism ) is a term for a British youth culture that emerged with Britpop in the 1990s. German equivalent to the term Lad about the guy or guys with Lad but other associations are connected to a loud, boastful affect lifestyle. Within the lad culture, young, male members of the middle class take on the attitudes and attributes of the young workers they perceive as stereotypical.

origin

Sean O'Hagan coined the term New Lad in a 1993 article in Arena magazine .

The New Lad is seen as the answer to the postmodern ' new man ' represented by (British) men's magazines such as Maxim , FHM and Loaded . The attempt was made to counteract the humiliation of the man by a new feminine power that was perceived as dominant, as well as the girl power . The traditional traditions of sexism and male friendliness or brotherhood were propagated in a new form.

lad culture in film and television

The lad culture is also represented and propagated in films and TV programs such as Snatch - Pigs and Diamonds and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and TV sitcoms , Men Behaving Badly and Game On . Men Behaving Badly and Fantasy Football League present Laddishness in the sense of drinking (drinking) , watching football and having sex , e.g. Sometimes, however, with a winking distance.

Culturally different characteristics and sub-categories

In the USA, the expression Frat Boy Nation refers to the classic Fraternity student who is rather skeptical of the New Men , but is clearly differentiated from the lower class redneck youth and the macho . In relation to the UK, e.g. T. the middle and lower class specific Lads from the real Englishmen , here students from the upper class, who also have and cause school problems, separated.

In lifestyle journalism there is a categorization of different subcultures of the "lads".

  • Classical Laddism mainly deals with wine, women and song and forms an informal network
  • Neo-Laddism quotes some classic loading behavior, but this is more distinguished and more reflective
  • Anti-Laddism or 'Terror Laddism' defends itself against anything that looks like Lad

The reception of the lad culture

The rise of the lad therefore correlates with a backlash against feminist approaches by men and women. The new man is described as unattractive and passive. In neofeminist treatises on female (promiscuous) sexuality, Lads are occasionally described as "refreshing" compared to the classic feminist male stereotypes that allegedly reduced men to monsters or eunuchs . Compared to “ softies ” or “luschies”, which - according to the satirist Fay Weldon - are good for the kitchen but not in the bedroom, the new lad creates a feeling of fun, consumption and sexual freedom that suits your own female body feeling.

Ladette

Young women who take up lad-like behavior are called Ladette. This designation is already listed in the Concise Oxford Dictionary .
