Ladislav Ženíšek (born March 7, 1904 in Vinohrady near Prague , † May 14, 1985 ) was a Czechoslovak football player and coach . With Czechoslovakia he became vice world champion in 1934 .

Club career

Ženíšek began playing football at ČAFC Vinohrady , in his youth he also played for SK Červený Kostelec, SK Pardubice and Teplitzer FK . In 1924 he moved to Viktoria Žižkov and played with the Prague team in the professional league established in 1925. In 1927, the defender went to the United States and joined the club Sparta Chicago, founded by Czech immigrants . After two years he returned to the Czechoslovak capital, but stayed only briefly with Victoria. In 1929 Ženíšek Slavia joined Prague, with whom he was able to win the Czechoslovak championship five times. The defender ended his career after the 1937/38 season, in which he played for Viktoria Žižkov.

National team

In the Czechoslovak national team Ladislav Ženíšek made his debut on January 17, 1926, Czechoslovakia defeated Italy in Turin with 1: 3. He was not called during his time in the United States.

In 1934 he took part in the World Cup in Italy . Czechoslovakia reached the final, in which they lost 2-1 to the hosts after extra time, also thanks to Ženíšek's outstanding performance.

His last of a total of 22 international matches, four of them as team captain , made Ženíšek on April 14, 1935, Czechoslovakia separated from Austria 0-0 in Prague .

Trainer

In 1940 Ženíšek took over the Prague Bohemians team , which he looked after until 1944. His next coaching station was his old club Viktoria Žižkov from 1945 to 1947. Then Ženíšek was coach at Vítkovicke železárny , where he managed to bring striker Josef Bican . From 1949 to 1951, Ženíšek trained the newly formed ATK army team, which later became Dukla Prague .

From April 1950 to May 1951, Ženíšek looked after the Czechoslovak national team in six games (record: three wins, two draws, one defeat, goal difference 12:10).

In total, Ženíšek worked as a coach at 15 different clubs in both the men's and the youth sector. He also looked after the Czechoslovak junior national team.
