Ladrón Peak is a solitary, highly visible mountain in the middle of New Mexico about 80 km southwest of Albuquerque . Ladron Peak is the only larger peak in the mountain range called Sierra Ladrones , which lies between the Rio Puerco in the east and the Rio Salado in the southwest.

Despite its volcanic appearance and proximity to lava flows and smaller vultans, it is not a volcano, but a mountain of granite from the Precambrian .

Surname

The name of the mountain means "thief" and "Sierra Ladrones" are the "thief mountains" because there were raids there by Navajos and Apaches and later by Hispanics and Anglo-American cattle thieves who used the mountains as hiding places. The prehistoric settlement has probably already taken place for more than 10,000 years up to the time of the Mogollon and Anasazi cultures. Today the mountain range is part of the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge , which is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service . The rest of the land is owned partly by the Bureau of Land Management and partly by private landowners.
