Career

Erika Gunilla Lagerbielke, daughter of textile artist Gunilla Lagerbielke and designer Lars Johanson , was born in Stockholm in 1960. Nothing is known about her youth. Between 1979 and 1983 she studied product design at the Konstfack Art School in Stockholm. She had a working scholarship from the Orrefors glassworks and had been working in the glassworks since 1982 before graduating from the art college. Over time, she became one of the most famous glass designers. One of her works is the Intermezzo series - a glass service that she designed for a younger audience in 1985. The bright blue drop in the glass stem is characteristic of the series. The series would become one of the best-selling in Orrefors history. Lagerbielke later said the following:

"Air is one of the elements of glass, and the tradition of decorating glass with air bubbles was my inspiration in designing the 30th anniversary Intermezzo glass, named Air."

In the following years she designed the Merlot series, which was characterized by its functionality and aesthetics.

In 2002 she designed the Difference series. The aim was to intensify the taste experience. She worked with wine expert Bengt Göran Kronstam to design the molds. The shapes of the glasses were matched to the different drinks.

For her glass series Intermezzo, Merlot and Difference she was given an Excellent Swedish Design Award .

In addition to her work at Orrefors, she worked from 2005 to 2009 as an assistant professor of design specializing in glass design at the University of Växjö . In 2009 she left her position at Orrefors. One of her last work there was the design of the glassware, which was the wedding gift from the Swedish parliament and government to the Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her husband Daniel of Sweden .

She went into business for herself. In 2009 she worked under Erika Lagerbielke Design and since 2010 with Tomas Åhlman under Erika Lagerbielke & Co AB. In addition, she has been working as an assistant professor for glass design at Linné University since 2010 .

Lagerbielke has recently started designing carpets. She benefits from the experience of glass design, how to work with the colors in several layers. In their opinion, a carpet is one of the most important furnishings in a room, which gives it character. She prefers function and innovation. Her expression of design is both classic and dynamic. Color combinations play a major role in her work. In this regard, she said the following:

"I actually grew up among yarns and fabrics. My parents worked with textile art and design in their own studio and I was often with them there. I have a strong emotional relation to textiles, but no real specialist knowledge. That makes the work of designing rugs rather exciting. "
