The Lago Buenos Aires / Lago General Carrera has a total area of around 1850 km².
The lake can be reached from the Chilean side via the Carretera Austral road . From Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez there is a ferry connection to Chile Chico , the journey takes around 2 1/2 hours. Chile Chico is a border town with Argentina.
Due to its southern location, the climate is already quite polar.
history
The village of Los Antiguos (now a small town) was built on the Argentine bank from 1900 . The settlement of the area began to increase from 1925. In 1971 and 1991 the towns around the lake were covered by large ash showers from the Cerro Hudson volcano . The volcano is located northwest of the lake at an altitude of 2600 m.
With the connection to the Carretera Austral road in the early 1990s, there was a certain economic boom in this remote area.
economy
The fishing and forestry play an important role in the region. In Puerto Tranquilo on the north-west coast of the lake, tourism is also gaining in importance, as there are marble caves here.
