particularities

Brackish water lake

The Fusaro Lake is a shallow lake at Bacoli .

It is located in Campania west of Naples . Only a narrow strip of coast separates it from the salt water of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Gulf of Naples . Since fresh water also flows in, it is filled with brackish water and forms a special biotope where the green velvet snail , for example, occurs. It is of volcanic origin. Among other things, the lake was used for oyster farming .

Drawing, 1874/75, unknown painter

In 1782 Carlo Vanvitelli, son of Luigi Vanvitelli , built a hunting pavilion (it: "casino da caccia") on a small artificial island for Ferdinand I at his country residence. The following year Jakob Philipp Hackert painted a picture for the king on site called “Hunting on Lake Fusaro” and was visited by Joseph II and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The work was stolen by Lazzaroni in 1799 ; only the sketches were preserved; Albert Kasimir von Sachsen-Teschen received them .

In ancient writings the lake was called "Acherusia lacus" or "Acherusia palus". Opus reticulatum is still preserved from a canal built in antiquity . There are ancient sites adjacent to Baiae and Cumae .

Lina Wertmüller shot the film "Ferdinando e Carolina" here in 1999.
