The main access for public and private transport is via a paved road since 2017 to the port of Puerto Fuy. On the eastern side is the place Puerto Pirehueico, from where the border road to the Hua Hum Pass leads to the Argentine border and then on to San Matín de los Andes . The two places are connected by a car ferry.
The surrounding forests are dominated by Coigüe , Mañío , Notro and Ulmo forest communities. In the vicinity of the lake is the Reserva Biológica Huilo Huilo .
