Lago Ranco is a large lake in southern Chile .

It is located in Region XIV ( Región de Los Ríos ). The lake is located between the cities of Futrono , Llifen and Lago Ranco .

The Lago Ranco has an area of ​​around 401 km² with a length of 95 km and an average depth of 150 m and a maximum of 199 m. The lake is an old glacial lake from the Ice Age with crystal clear water. There are many wonderful beaches by the lake. It is the source of the Río Bueno River .

In the middle of the lake is the island of Huapi , a community of 600 Huilliche Indians live here. There are a total of 11 inhabited islands on the lake, plus there are five smaller islands called Las Chichivitas , they are uninhabited.

There is a rich flora and fauna. On plants these are z. B. myrtle plants and fuchsias . Many water birds, such as ducks and cormorants, live on the lake . The sea is very rich in fish. B. Trout and salmon .

history

The town of Lago Ranco was established as a train station in 1936 when a railway line was laid from Río Bueno .

economy

Tourism, fishing and forestry play an important role in the area. The lake is ideal for sailing and fishing. There are campsites on the banks.
