Lago Ranco is a city and municipality in southern Chile. It is located in the province of Ranco in the Región de Los Ríos . The municipality of Lago Ranco is located on the south bank of the lake of the same name, Lago Ranco .

Most of the population of Lago Ranco lives in rural areas. Agriculture, forestry and tourism are the most important branches of the economy. The Andes Cordillera and the northern part of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex comprise most of the municipal area. The largest body of water in the municipality is Lago Ranco. Smaller lakes are Lago Maihue, El Huishue, Las Lagunas Gemelas and Lago Gris.

history

Before the European conquest, the area around Lake Ranco was inhabited by the Mapuche people Huilliche . For the young Chilean state in the 19th century, the area around Lago Ranco was not a priority. The first colonists did not settle on the lake shore until the end of the 19th century. The cartographer Bernhard Eunom Philippi drew the first maps of the area in 1848. The development of traffic in the area began in 1928 with the start of construction of a railway branch line from La Unión . Above all, the entrepreneurial spirit of the Konust, Daniel and Retting families promoted the project. After its completion in the 1930s, the place experienced an economic boom, mainly through forestry. In 1941 the area was officially declared a municipality.

The railway connection was given up in the 1970s and preference was given to bus and truck transport. In the meantime, Lago Ranco can be completely bypassed on an asphalt road. Attractions such as the private reserve Parque Futangue, founded in 1997, have turned the area into a tourist attraction.
