General

The district borders directly on the Ruhr . It is not known when the district was first called Lake. The name Lake comes from Low German and means something like "swampy meadow" or "brine". In fact, there was a salt store on the Hevener Ruhrwiese from 1801 to 1859. The spelling Laake can still be found in homeland books and postcards until the 1920s .

Recreation

Since the establishment of a ferry service between the Hardenstein ruins and the Hevener Ruhrufer in 2006 (see also: Hardenstein (ship) ), Lake has been connected to the Ruhrtalradweg ; According to the ferry operator, the ferry was used by around 70,000 day trippers in the first year. Until 2006, the Heven district was in a kind of deep sleep: Despite its large meadows and the cycling and hiking trails located directly on the banks of the Ruhr, almost exclusively residents used these areas for local recreation, as the geographically self-sufficient Lake district is connected to the river by the Ruhr could not participate in the rich local recreational opportunities on the opposite bank of the Ruhr ( Muttental mining trail , Hardenstein ruins, Ruhr Valley Railway Museum Train ).

lock

Between 1776 and 1778 the first Herbeder lock and a lock channel were built; the new lock that was built in the early 1980s is now used almost exclusively for the Witten excursion boat, the Schwalbe II , as a loading platform. The name Herbeder Schleuse is due to the fact that Heven belongs to Herbede . Until 1919, Heven belonged to the Herbede office , only in 1920 did the municipality of Witten join.
