In addition to the water of the Snowy River, some tributaries such as the Thredbo River and the Eucumbene River also flow into Lake Jindabyne . On the lake is the Jindabyne pumping station that pumps water to Lake Eucumbene and from there into the Murray River and Murrumbidgee Rivers . The water flow into Lake Jindabyne increases sharply in spring during the snowmelt in October and November.

After the dam was completed in 1967, only 1% of the previous volume flowed in the Snowy River. In the 1990s, a citizens' committee was formed to denounce this situation. As a result, a parliamentary commission of inquiry of the governments of New South Wales and Victoria was set up, which proposed to discharge at least 15% of the original water volume into the Snowy River. The non-party politician Craig Ingram was elected in the Victoria Parliament for eastern Gippsland . This campaigned for an improved water flow of the Snowy River. When the Australian Labor Party won the election in 1999 , he and other nonpartisan politicians reached an agreement with Steve Bracks , leader of the Australian Labor Party of Victoria, that provides for 28% water. This regulation was long-term agreed by the governments of New South Wales and Victoria from the year 2000.

On the shores of Lake Jindabyne there is a bronze monument to the Pole Paul Strzelecki , who was the first European explorer to visit the area.

The lake used to be the location of Jindabyne , which was built as the dam for Lake Jindabyne for the Snowy Mountains system and had to be relocated to another location. Today, ski tourists often visit this new place in winter, as the ski areas in Kosciuszko National Park can be reached in about 30 minutes by car. Lake Jindabyne is known in Australia for being one of the best fishing spots for trout . Water sports such as water skiing and sailing are also practiced on the lake.
