The Skinner Reservoir (also Lake Skinner ) is a reservoir in Riverside County in the US state of California . Its dam was completed in 1973 and enlarged in 1991, making the lake hold 54,500,000 m³ of water. Today the Skinner Reservoir is also a popular recreational area.

Located in an unparalleled area in Riverside County , California , Skinner Reservoir is 448 m above sea level. The reservoir is located at the foot of the Bachelor Mountains in the Auld Valley , 15 km northeast of Temecula .

Today the Skinner Reservoir holds up to 54,400,000 m³ of water and extends to an area of ​​5.7 km². It was created by damming the Tucalota Creek and the two smaller creeks Middle Creek and Schoolhouse Creek . The dammed Tucalota Creek flows out of the Skinner Reservoir. The water eventually drains into the Pacific Ocean via the Santa Gertrudis Creek , Murrieta Creek and Santa Margarita River .

The Skinner Reservoir is operated by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District and is leased to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The reservoir is filled with water via both the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California State Water Project . A filter system delivers the purified water to 2.5 million people in Riverside County and San Diego Counties . The lake is named for Robert A. Skinner who was the chief executive of the Metropolitan Water District from 1962 to 1967. This signed a contract with the California Department of Water Resources for water supplies from Northern California .

Use as a recreation area

In addition to its purpose as a reservoir, the Skinner Reservoir now serves as a recreational area. Activities on offer include sailing, fishing, horse riding, hiking and swimming in another nearby body of water. The recreation area comprises 5.7 km² of water and another 1.2 km² of land. There are 241 camping sites for vacationers. The Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival and the Solar Cup electric boat race are held annually at Skinner Reservoir .
