Life

Salma Bennani, born on May 10, 1978 in Fez, Morocco, is the daughter of the teacher Abdelhamid Bennani, who taught at the École normal supérieure in Fez, and his wife Naïma Bensouda, who died three years after the birth of their daughter. She has an older sister and three half-sisters from her father's second marriage. After the death of her mother, Bennani grew up as a half-orphan with her sister Meryem (who became a doctor) with her maternal grandmother, Fatma Abdellaoui Maâne, in Rabat . After attending a private school, she completed an apprenticeship as a qualified engineer in technical computer science at the École nationale supérieure d'informatique et d'analysis des systèmes (ENSIAS) in Rabat and then worked in Fes as a computer scientist for a company that in part belonged to the Moroccan royal family.

In October 2001 she became engaged to the Moroccan King Mohammed VI., Whom she had met for the first time in 1993, and married him on March 21, 2002. On the occasion of the marriage she was raised by her husband to the status of a princess , which is in the The history of Morocco is a unique occurrence and has been called Lalla Salma ever since . She is the mother of two children. Her son Moulay Hassan , the Moroccan Crown Prince , was born on May 8, 2003 , and their daughter, Princess Lalla Khadija, was born on February 28, 2007 .

In addition to representative tasks in public, the princess was also committed to women's rights in Morocco. In 2018, various print media across Europe, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , reported that the princess had completely withdrawn from the public at the end of 2017 and that there was speculation about a separation or an already completed divorce of the royal couple. However, there are no official statements by the royal family on this. In the 2017 press freedom list published by Reporters Without Borders , Morocco was ranked 133rd out of 180 countries.

During 2019, Lalla Salma was seen by her children several times, both in Morocco and abroad. However, there are no joint appearances or pictures showing her at her husband's side.
