λ Velorum ( Lambda Velorum , short λ Vel ) is a giant of the spectral class K4 Ib-II. It is a variable whose apparent visual brightness varies between approximately 2.1 and 2.3 mag. This makes it the third brightest star in the constellation Vela. Its parallax of around 6 milli-arcseconds results in a distance of around 170 parsecs. The star is also called Suhail (from Arabic سهيل الوزن, DMG Suhail al-Wazn ), but not to be confused with the star Gamma Velorum, also called Suhail .
