Lambert von Barmstede

Lambert II von Barmstede († November 6, 1228 in Ratzeburg ) was a Holstein nobleman and bishop of Ratzeburg .

Life

Lambert II von Barmstede came from the von Barmstede family , who lived in the Elbmarschen in the 12th and 13th centuries . He was the son of the knight Wilbrand von Barmstede (around 1175–1195). He was a Hamburg canon who appeared in various documents from 1212, 1217 and 1223. After the papal appointment, Lambert became bishop of Ratzeburg on November 6th, 1228 and died six months later on November 6th, 1228. His grave slab is in the Ratzeburg Cathedral and bears the inscription "Lambertus quintus epus" and his crosier is reversed. This was probably intentional, because he was not elected by the cathedral chapter according to the statutes , but the pen of Pope Gregory IX. imposed. “Since he is a stranger,” says a chronicler, “when he first entered the church, he was seized by a fiery flush of fire in the face, as if this wanted to prevent his entry”. “He entered like a wolf; not called by church council. He ruled only briefly when death overtook him ”. Envy and anger reigned after his death. As bishop Lambert II celebrated his only mass on August 15, 1228 and consecrated a cemetery.

Lambert II is not the same person as his cousin Lambert I (around 1211), son of Borchart I von Barmstede (around 1190).
