Lamberto Zannier (born June 15, 1954 in Fagagna ) is an Italian diplomat and has been the OSCE's High Commissioner for National Minorities since July 19, 2017 .

Life

After studying law at the University of Trieste , he worked for the FAO from 1976 to 1979 . He then entered the Italian diplomatic service and worked at the embassies in the United Arab Emirates , Austria and the Netherlands . In 1991 he was seconded to NATO , where he was responsible for disarmament issues (until 1997). Activities for the OSCE followed, and from 2000 to 2002 he was permanent representative of Italy to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague . From 2002 to 2006 he worked for the OSCE in Vienna. He then returned to the Foreign Ministry in Rome until, on June 20, 2008, he succeeded the German Joachim Rücker as head of UNMIK (United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo). From July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2017, he was Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

He is married and has two children.
