origin

It is an autochthonous red wine variety from Italy. It is considered to be the most aromatic tasting of the numerous Lambrusco varieties.

According to DNA analyzes (2005), Lambrusco Grasparossa and Lambrusco di Castelvetro, which were previously considered to be independent, were recognized as identical.

distribution

The variety is widespread mainly in the province of Reggio Emilia, but is also grown in Bologna, Mantua and Parma.

The forested area in 2010 was 2726 ha in Italy and 2738 ha worldwide.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The medium-sized leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are three-lobed or unlobed and hardly curved. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are large compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is hardly blistered. The leaves turn reddish in autumn.
  • The mostly conical grape is usually shouldered, medium-sized and loose berries. The oval berries are medium-sized and bluish-black in color. The peel of the berry is extremely strong and firm.

Maturation: about 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore late-ripening. In Emilia-Romagna, the grapes are collected from the end of September to the beginning of October.
