Lambton Harbor in the urban area of Wellington is part of the natural harbor Wellington Harbor on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Lambton Harbor is located east of the center of Wellington and is therefore of the western part of Wellington Harbor . The port area has an area of around 1.2 km × 1.2 km, has a coastline of around 5 km and a water depth of between 8.3 m and 17.4 m, flattening out towards the southern promenade.
history
When the first settlers came to Wellington in early 1840 via the New Zealand Company , their ships were still anchored in Petone Bay , at the northern end of Wellington Harbor , which at the time was still called Port Nicholson . But the anchorages were in the shallow water area, and the settlement area of Petone was in swampy terrain, which could also be quickly flooded. So the settlers looked for more suitable places and in April 1840 moved to what is now Lambdon Harbor . The water was deeper there and the anchorages were better protected from the winds. This laid the foundation for today's port area.
With the conversion of goods transport using containers in the 1970s, the transshipment points shifted to the north outside of Lambton Harbor , which since then has been increasingly becoming a mix of public and private use.
