The State Hospital Rankweil (colloquially Valduna ) is one of five state hospitals in Vorarlberg and is run as a specialty hospital for psychiatry and neurology .

history

In 1399 the monastery Valduna was founded in the southeast of Rankweil by nuns of the Clarissins , which existed until 1782.

Pastor Jochum founded the Valduna charity as a private institution in 1858 - for the care of mentally ill people. In 1868 this was taken over by the public sector and run as the Valduna state insane asylum . In 1900, the psychiatrist Peter Paul Pfausler became the director of the state insane asylum and, as an agricultural specialist, included agricultural activities in the therapy.

time of the nationalsocialism

In the course of annexation to Germany in 1938 the state insane asylum was expropriated and converted into the Valduna Gauanstalt . Under the direction of Josef Vonbun , 263 patients were brought to the Nazi killing center in Hartheim via the Niedernhart intermediate facility in Linz , where they were killed. So the institution was emptied and used as a reserve hospital - in the spirit of total war .

post war period

At the end of the war in 1945, a nerve department, a lung department and a disability department were set up again, with the latter subsequently becoming departments for surgery and orthopedics.

Between 1968 and 1990 the old buildings were demolished and replaced by new ones. In 1993 the name "Valduna Regional Nerve Hospital" was changed to "Rankweil Regional Hospital".

Departments

Today there are six different departments in this hospital:

  • neurology
  • psychiatry
  • Physical medicine
  • Internal Department of Hematology and Oncology
  • Nursing school
  • radiology
