Sutel's self-portrait

Jeremias Sutel (* around 1587 in Northeim ; † April 11, 1631 in Hanover ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Sutel was a grandson of the master craftsman Johann Sutel , who brought the Reformation to Schweinfurt, Göttingen and Northeim. A Justus Sutelius is given as his father, who was mayor of Nordheim until 1613. On June 8, 1623 he married Lucke (nee Schmedes) a daughter of the master Claus Schmedes (church book of the Hanoverian market church ).

Sutel's artistic pictorial forms and his expressiveness were a role model for his student Ludolf Witte and other artists such as Peter Köster , the master of the Leibnizhaus , Hans Jakob Uhle and Jürgen Gebhard Schrader. Only a few of his numerous works in and around Hanover have survived. So, among other things, the Obentrautdenkmal in Seelze , the baptismal font in the Elisabeth Church in Langenhagen , probably also the epitaph of Pastor Haller and his wife at the Wilkenburg church.

A drawing by Sutels in an artist's register, now in Berlin, shows a winged genius with a laurel wreath and wallet, who chases after the ragged sculptor who runs away. Below the words:

"In misery, misery, hardship and suffering, less consumes his time, I avoid such things"

and the signature

“Jeremias Sutel Bilth. from Northeimb, happened in Hanover in 1620 on the 17th of December "

He had acquired a signature in which all the letters of his last name were merged, the S was inclined slightly to the left, TEL formed one letter inclined to the right and the U as V connected them together.

Also the most important work related to his murder: the epitaph for the mayor Statius Vasmer with the relief of the burial of Jacob on which Sutel depicted himself with a mallet and chisel.

Obentraut memorial near Seelze

On April 4, 1631 he was fatally injured by a disapproving and drunk painter in front of the house on the writing and Münchehof and died on April 11 of that year. Carl Schuchardt writes about Sutel's murder:

“So we can consider this as established about Sutel's death: The master was lured out of his house in the evening and stabbed to death by a painter Erich Meier, born in Hameln. The painter was incited by others, as if Sutel were rising above him with his art, and thereupon he had done the grave deed while drunk, for which he had to atone in his own death after a long negotiation. "

The church book of the Marktkirche reports about the end of the murderer:

"1632 August 3. Erich Meyer, the Mahler, who stabbed Jeremias Sutler in April and was justified today and decollated on the market, is buried with ceremonies at 2 o'clock at Sankt Nicolai Kirchhoff."

Sutel was buried in the (old) St. Nicolai cemetery . His student Ludolf Witte created the tombstone.

The Hanoverian doctor and writer Wilhelm Blumenhagen dedicated a story to the story around 1830.

An old driveway, which led from Klein-Buchholz via Bothfeld to Isernhagen , was expanded to a normal city street in the course of urban development, gained national importance in its largest section as Landesstraße 382 and on which a tram will still run in the 21st century, was named in 1940 after the sculptor Sutelstrasse . It leads from Podbielskistraße in Hanover to Böckerstraße.
