Ludolf Witte
Ludolf Witte (* unknown; † 1649 or 1650 in Hanover ) was a German sculptor of the Renaissance .
Life
Witte was a student of the stonemason and sculptor Jeremias Sutel and the teacher of Peter Köster . He worked in the Hanover area from 1631 to 1649. He was not only the link between two of the most important Hanoverian sculptors, but also a master of his subject himself. Only the grave stele for Jeremias Sutel in the St. Nikolai cemetery in Hanover remains of his work . According to Carl Schuchhardt , it bears - in addition to the inscription - the master's mark Ludolf Wittes: "LM"
A photo of a gravestone of Heinrich Crusius († 1648) created by Witte is printed in the Hannoversche Geschichtsbl Blätter Neuesequence, Volume 12 from 1959, page 298.
In 1632 he went into business for himself and bought a house in the Köblingerstraßenviertel on Dammstraße in Hanover, where a Harmen Lichtenberger had previously lived. He lived here until 1649. On October 23, 1632, he married Catharina (née Hagen, † 1667). The couple had a son Hermann Matthias Witte (born February 2, 1634) and a daughter Ilse Heidewig, who married Nicolaus Finger on August 15, 1653. His wife stayed in the house after his death. For the year 1650 it is recorded as Ludolf Witten W [itwe].
