The Leibnizhaus in Hanover

Peter Köster (* around 1621 , place of birth unknown; † buried on June 21, 1669 in Hanover ; also Koster , Kuster , Küster ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Apart from his marriage to Catharina Schrader (1663 in Hanover), only a few details of Peter Köster's life have come down to us. He was a student of Ludolf Witte and was considered the most creative sculptor of his time in Hanover. His main work is the stone work on the facade of the Leibnizhaus (built in 1652). It was considered the most beautiful Renaissance house in the city until it was completely destroyed during the air raids on Hanover in 1943 during World War II . When the Leibnizhaus was rebuilt from 1981 to 1983 on the Holzmarkt in Hanover, it was reconstructed using old documents and photos.

In addition, Köster created numerous, mostly no longer preserved gravestones. A relief on Cord Hölling's grave (around 1660) inside the Neustädter St. Johannis Church and the Hanebut tombstone (around 1661) in the St. Nicolai Church in Hanover-Bothfeld have been preserved . Peter Köster is known as the "Master of the Leibniz House".

Honors

Peter-Köster-Straße in Groß-Buchholz , laid out in 1927, was named after the sculptor.
