The Podbielskistraße , in the vernacular Podbi called, is a largely four-lane road in Hannover . With a length of approx. 5.2 km, it is one of the most important entry and exit roads in the city. It is named after the Prussian Lieutenant General Victor von Podbielski .

course

The street, called Podbi for short , begins at Lister Platz in continuation of the Lister Meile and crosses the List district out of town in an east-northeast direction . Between Spannhagenstraße and Eulenkamp it forms the border between the districts of List and Groß-Buchholz . Then lying alone in Groß-Buchholz, after about four kilometers on the Noltemeyerbrücke it crosses the Mittelland Canal and from here to its end at the intersection with Buchholzer and Kirchhorster Straße is the border between the districts of Groß-Buchholz and Bothfeld .

history

The old administration building of the Bahlsen company on Podbielskistraße

Until 1904 the Podbielskistraße was called Celler Chaussee as an extension of the old Celler Heerstraße , today Lister Meile . Before 1900 there were only individual courtyards here, systematic block development did not take place until later. At that time, the village of List was still outside the city limits of Hanover. It was not incorporated until 1891.

Starting from Lister Platz, Podbielskistraße was gradually built on. Industrial companies and trades settled there, some with buildings "which must be considered to have shaped the townscape and the historical development on Podbielskistraße" ( Uta Boockhoff-Gries ). An important prerequisite for this was the connection to the city's electrical supply.

In the 1920s and 1930s, large contiguous residential areas were built on Podbielskistraße, such as the Grenzburg at Platz Vier Grenzen , the Spannhagengarten settlement or the Listhof. Many of them are now listed .

The street is also lined with some important historic industrial buildings. The old administration building of the Bahlsen company is an important Art Nouveau building . It is located directly at the beginning of the street in the city center. Further out of town is the Pelikanviertel , the former headquarters of Pelikan AG , which is now a hotel and business district. The earlier Deutsche Grammophon work is located nearby . The headquarters of Geha-Werke was at the intersection of Podbielskistraße / Sutelstraße in Bothfeld . Dyes & Co. was another company on this street.

In the 1990s, some companies gave up their industrial sites. Today they are used by a mixture of residential, commercial and offices.

Light rail

In 1901 a tram line towards Klein-Buchholz was set up on Podbielskistraße . Today the tram route of lines 3, 7 and 9 in the direction of Altwarmbüchen , Misburg and Fasanenkrug runs here . As seen from Lister Platz, it initially runs underground, after about 500 m it leaves the tunnel and from here runs above ground.

Today's residents

Shops and stores can be found on Podbielskistraße in different densities. There are concentrations in the inner-city part of the street towards Lister Platz, around the Four Borders Square and at the level of the Pelikanviertel .

Residential developments predominate in the western part of the street, while a number of commercial enterprises such as ING-DiBa and car dealers are located in the eastern part .
