Lando (Pope)
Lando (lat. Landus , * in the 9th century east of Rome ; † 914) was Pope from 913 to 914 .
Life
Very little is known of Lando: he, whose father was called Taino, was born not far east of Rome . In July or August of 913 he was elected Pope and served for about six months.
From Lando's pontificate, only the donations and privileges in favor of the diocese of Sabina are known, which he previously presided over.
Presumably, the Pope was completely under the control of the Roman city lord Theophylact I of Tusculum , who both as Vestarar (papal chamberlain) controlled the entire property management of the church and as doge headed the Senate, as consul of the militia, as well as the so-called pornocracy (mistress rule ), which Theodora I of Tusculum and her daughter Marozia under Sergius III. had been established.
He was the last Pope whose name was not adopted by any later Pope, and before John Paul I (1978) and Pope Francis (2013) had a name previously unused.
reception
The narrow source situation and the short pontificate of Lando was thematized by the Austrian artist collective monochrom in the song "Hello Lando", which honors him as the "least important Pope" ("No history is good history"). The song appeared on the album Carefully Selected Moments .
