Anastasius III. (*? in Rome ; † June, September or November 913), was Pope from April 911 to June, early September or November 913 .

Life

Anastasio, whose father was called Lutianus, was born in Rome and during the pontificate of Sergius III. appointed cardinal deacon and also his successor.

Among the few pieces of information about his pontificate are the bestowal of the pallium to Patriarch Lawrence of Grado between 912 and 913 and Ragemberto, Bishop of Vercelli on February 10, 912.

In the case of the bull "Convenit apostolico" supposedly issued by him (or by John X. ), which confirms the legal sovereignty of the Archdiocese of Hamburg "over the bishops among the Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, Icelanders, Skridefin, Greenlanders and all Nordic nations as well among the Slavs between Peene and Eider ”, combined with the permission to Hoger , Archbishop of Hamburg, to wear miter and pallium on the usual holidays, it is possibly a forgery from the 12th century.

His pontificate falls into the time of the rule of Roman nobles over Rome and the rule of mistresses ( pornocracy ).

The circumstances of his death are unclear, it is possible that he fell out of favor with the Roman city patriciate under the rule of Theophylact I of Tusculum and his wife Theodora I of Tusculum and was murdered on their behalf.

According to the epitaph, his body was buried in St. Peter's Basilica , in the vestibule of the old basilica. The grave was destroyed when the basilica was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries.
