Lands of Lore: Götterdämmerung is a computer role-playing game from Westwood Studios and the sequel to Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos . The original title of the second part was Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny , which got the subtitle Götterdämmerung in German , as the game revolves around the death and rebirth of an evil god. In other parts of Europe, it was also released as Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny . The game was released on September 27, 1997 for MS-DOS and Windows .

action

Through the use of the lower mask in the first part of the trilogy, an ancient magical creature was awakened that had slept for generations due to the lack of ancestral magic that it draws on. She was created by the wicked ancestor god Belial to use her as a mother for his rebirth after he was sentenced to death by the council of ancestors. The only one who could endanger him on his return is Scotia's son Luther. While she was dying, Scotia had tried to transfer the magic of the down mask to her son. But instead of the ability to transform voluntarily, Luther suffers from uncontrolled mutations that allow him to switch back and forth between his human form, that of a lizard or a giant monster. Luther has to flee his captivity on Gladstone and start the search for Belial.

Gameplay

Unlike in the predecessor, the player does not control a group of heroes, but only one character with Luther. From the beginning Luther possessed the gift of shapeshifting, but could not control it. Therefore, its shape always randomly changes between its human appearance, a small lizard or a giant monster. The game world is in 3D graphics and is presented from the first person perspective . In contrast to its predecessor, the player no longer has to move in blocks and with 90-degree rotations, but can explore the environment freely. Battles take place in real time.

development

At the beginning of the development Westwood still used a 16-bit program architecture. In the course of development, the whole thing had to be converted to 32-bit, which is why the publication was delayed because the program code had to be largely rewritten. The second part of Lands of Lore used real 3D graphics, with 3D accelerator cards only being used through a patch. Westwood FMV sequences with real actors were used for cutscenes.

Lands of Lore 2 received mostly positive reviews ( GameRankings : 73.50%).

"The wait was worth it. The saying: Good things take time, certainly applies to Lands of Lore 2. The imaginative worlds that are offered here on four CDs is amazing. I hardly notice the absence of a party because with Luther's constantly changing three forms of being I am well utilized and can really sympathize with his difficult fate. [...] Perhaps many a veteran role player may miss a thousand different character values or regulations and feel uncomfortable in the 3D environment. Nevertheless, Westwood offers crisp entertainment for enterprising adventurers of all stripes. "

In Germany, Lands of Lore 2 entered the second half of October according to the sales charts of Media Control , was able to maintain this position in the first half of November and ended the year in the top 10. It stayed in the top 50 for 28 weeks until May 1998. In the United States, the game reached number 11 on the sales charts in October 1997, according to PC Data . The game fell at a time when role-playing games had fallen behind other genres in terms of sales. Therefore, an author of the CNET Gamecenter saw in combination with the equally successful games Ultima Online and Fallout a return of the genre to old success numbers.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated the game for the Interactive Achievement Awards as the best RPG of 1997, but ultimately awarded the prize to the real-time strategy game Dungeon Keeper .
