Long junk

The western section of the Finow Canal near Eberswalde between Zerpenschleuse and Liebenwalde is called Langer Trödel . Trödel or flood was the name of the first Finow Canal between Liebenwalde and the Finow near Schöpfurt in 1609 . With the decommissioning and filling of the two Zerpenschleuser locks in 1924/1925, the Lange Trödel became a 10-kilometer-long dead end . The name Trödel is a play on words made up of towering and dawdling (strolling, being slow). After 3 years of expansion, the Lange Trödel has been open to continuous boat traffic again since June 16, 2016.

Renaturation

The canal steadily silted up in the following decades, and every year an excessive growth of algae occurred due to the discharged sewage . Since 1990 there have been repeated considerations to at least reopen the Lange Trödel for recreational shipping. For this purpose, the state of Brandenburg founded the Water Tourism Initiative Nordbrandenburg (WIN), which also includes representatives of the districts and communities concerned. The restoration required extensive work: three bridges - a bascule bridge for the route of the federal road 109 in the center of Zerpenschleuse, a lift bridge on the forest road in Zerpenschleuse and a bascule bridge along the state road 21 in Liebenwalde - had to be rebuilt. In addition, the canal had to be deepened and the Zerp lock had to be rebuilt.

Bank of the Long Junk

Although there are now weekend properties on the former lock area, the responsible local authority in Wandlitz decided at least to build a new bridge in 2008. The construction of the bascule bridges was supposed to start in 2012, but the tender for the construction of the lock and the bridges had to be canceled at the end of July 2012, as all incoming bids were higher than specified by the project. The original plan to make the Lange Trödel fully navigable again for pleasure craft in 2013 had therefore failed.

The municipal council decided on June 16, 2011 to provide an additional 177,000 euros for the WIN project, which were available from 2012. Once again, the start of expansion had to be postponed in summer 2012 because the results of the tenders for the necessary work exceeded the budgeted budget.

Finally, in 2013 work began on the construction of the port in Liebenwalde, the bridge on the B 109 and the lock system in Zerpenschleuse. The Schnell Havel water and soil association acts as the general contractor. The new lift bridge for the forest road was installed between June and August 2014, and a slipway for canoes, rowing and trailerable motor and sailing boats is being built for the new lock . The community had parking spaces for cars and boat trailers built nearby . The larger bridge for the overpass of the L 100 was put into operation for the reopening of the waterway in 2016.

For the direct work on the lock, it was stipulated that the canal in the FFH area should not exceed a width of 7.10 meters in the sense of minimal interference with the environment, so it can only be navigated with one-ship in one-way traffic. In the Zerpenschleuse location, however, the bed should be twice as wide - with the exception of the bridges. There will be waiting places in front of the bridges. Directly on behalf of the municipality, two moorings for sport boats and a canoe insertion point are being built next to the forest bridge in Zerpenschleuse. Continuous navigation has been possible again since June 16, 2016.
