Ruea Hang Yao : typical construction of the drive

Ruea Hang Yao ( Thai : เรือ หางยาว , German: Langheckboot , English Long-tail boat or long-tailed boat ) is the Thai name for a narrow long boat that is used in Southeast Asia . Common Ruea Hang Yao are 14 to 18 meters long and no wider than 1.80 meters. An internal combustion engine is used for propulsion , which is fixedly mounted on the stern of the boat but can be swiveled through 180 degrees , which enables the thrust vector control. So the missing rudder is replaced. The long propeller shaft - it measures up to 6 meters - which connects the engine directly to a propeller , gave the vehicle its name long-tail boat. The propeller, which usually has two blades with a steep pitch , can be raised and lowered using them ; it can be brought into the most favorable position at any time and even lifted completely out of the water. In particular, this also allows shipping to shallow waters. The drive described occupies a special position between outboard motor and inboard motor . The Ruea Hang Yao are used as a means of transport for the transport of people and goods on rivers, canals ( khlongs ) and in coastal island traffic. A light and very fast variant of the Ruea Hang Yao is used for special boat races . It is less than 5 meters long.
