Larry Smith (* 1943 in Aliquippa , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz - saxophonist , predominantly in Detroit is active music scene.

Live and act

Smith became aware of the bebop Charlie Parkers and Dizzy Gillespies through his uncle's jazz records and began performing as a musician in nearby Pittsburgh at the age of 15 ; his mentor was Sonny Stitt . In 1961 he moved to New York, where he a. a. played with Shirley Scott , Joe Chambers and Rahsaan Roland Kirk . In Detroit he worked a. a. with James Carter , on whose albums Conversin 'with the Elders (1996) and Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge (2004) he participated. In the 1980s he played in the soul-funk group The Smithcox Organization . In 1985 he performed again with Sonny Stitt a week before his death in the New York club Sweet Basil . In 1999 he recorded the duo album Angel Eyes for Philology with Franco D'Andrea in Milan . In 2003 he performed at the Village Vanguard before a stroke interrupted his career. He is now performing regularly in the Bert's Marketplace jazz club on the Eastern Market. In 2011 he presented his quartet with Doug Hammond , Kirk Lightsey and Aaron James at the INNtöne Jazzfestival .
