John Lawrence "Larry" Whitty, Baron Whitty, PC (* 15. June 1943 ) is a British trade union functionary and politician of the Labor Party , was the 1985-1994 General Secretary of the Labor Party since 1996 and member of the House of Lords is.

Life

University degree, trade union official and general secretary of the Labor Party

After attending Latymer Upper School Whitty graduated in Economics at St John's College of Cambridge University and graduated with a Bachelor from of Arts (BA Economics). During his studies he worked for the aircraft manufacturer Hawker Siddeley from 1960 to 1962 and began his professional career after graduating in 1965 at the Ministry of Aviation Technology.

He then worked for the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella organization of the British trade unions , from 1970 to 1973 , before he worked for the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trade Union (GMB), which with 600,000 members was one of the largest, until 1985 UK unions count.

In 1985 Whitty succeeded Jim Mortimer as Secretary General of the Labor Party. He held this position for nine years until he was replaced by Tom Sawyer in 1994. He himself was then coordinator for European policy of the Labor Party between 1994 and 1997 .

House of Lords

On October 21, 1996, he was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Whitty , of Camberwell in the London Borough of Southwark . November 19, 1996 on its introduction (followed Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords .

During his membership in the House of Baron Whitty between 1997 and 1998 was initially Parliamentary Secretary of the Government faction in the upper house ( Government Whip ) and spokesman for the Labor Group for European Affairs, International Development, Foreign, Affairs of the Commonwealth of Nations , education and employment.

In 1998 he became Parliamentary Undersecretary in the Ministry of Environment, Transport and the Regions from Prime Minister Tony Blair , where he was “Junior Minister” for Roads and Road Safety until 2001. Subsequently, Lord Whitty was Parliamentary Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between 2001 and 2005.

After leaving this government office, he was chairman of the National Consumer Council between 2006 and 2008 and a member of the National Water Regulation Authority for some time in 2006 . Lord Whitty, the pension committee of the Environment Agency (since 2006 member of the Board and Chairman of Environment Agency is), was also between 2008 and 2010 chairman of the consumer organization Consumer Focus .

Lord Whitty is currently serving as Vice President of the Local Government Association and the Trading Standards Institute , who advises the Northern Ireland Consumers Council on energy matters . He also is a board member of the think tank Smith Institute , vice president of environmental group Environmental Protection UK , as well as chairman of the charity Lehman Chesshire Trust .
