Lars-Pele Berthelsen

Lars-Pele Berthelsen (born September 20, 1949 in Qeqertarsuaq ) is a Greenlandic pastor , teacher , local politician , judge and writer .

Life

Lars-Pele Berthelsen was born in Qeqertarsuaq and grew up there. His father was the printer and Provincial Councilor Hans Egede Berthelsen (1918–?). His older half-brother was the politician Knud Sørensen (1934–2009). Like his father, Lars-Pele Berthelsen is a trained printer, but graduated from a teaching degree in 1976. From 1976 to 1983 he worked as a teacher. In the local elections in 1983 he was elected mayor of the municipality of Qeqertarsuaq for the Siumut . In 1985 he gave up the office to train as a pastor. On July 21, 1987, he was ordained in Nuuk . In 1988 he was appointed pastor in his hometown. From 1990 to 1992 he was chairman of the Greenland Pastors' Association. In 1996 he resigned as a pastor and became a teacher in Nuuk again. In 1998 he was appointed pastor in Qasigiannguit . He worked as a judge for many years, including from 1992 as a district judge in Qeqertarsuaq.

Lars-Pele Berthelsen, who was known as a musician in his younger years, published the book Kaassalimik oqaluttuaq in 2011 about a girl from Kangerluk who is kidnapped by European whalers and who gives birth to a blond child a little later. For the book he was awarded the Children's and Young People's Literature Prize of the West Nordic Council in 2012, making him the first and so far only award winner from Greenland.
