Lars Gule (born June 24, 1955 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian philosopher , historian and social scientist .

Life

As a young man, Lars Gule was arrested in 1977 in Beirut , Lebanon, for the transfer of explosives intended for a terrorist attack by the Democratic Front to liberate Palestine on a target in Israel . He was sentenced to six months in prison for illegally possessing explosives, but not for participating in a terrorist act.

In 1978 he began studying philosophy, history and social sciences at the University of Bergen . During this time he distanced himself from Marxism as an ideology, rejected the concept of class struggle and condemned the “ left wing romanticism ”. He joined the social democratic youth organization Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking and temporarily headed their academic group at the University of Bergen, but without becoming a member of the parent organization ( Arbeiderpartiet ).

After completing his studies, which he completed with a master's degree in 1986, Gule initially performed various administrative tasks at the University of Bergen, from 1987 onwards at the Institute for Languages and Cultures of the Middle East and at the Institute for Philosophy of Science. In 1989 he moved to the Chr. Michelsens Institututt , an independent research facility in Bergen that deals with human rights and development aid issues. From 1998 to 2000 he was coordinator of the Nature, Society and Water research program at the University of Bergen. At the same university he received his doctorate in 2003 with the thesis Social Development and Political Progress in Two Traditions. A Conceptual and Comparative Analysis of Western and Arab-Islamic Ideas of Social and Political Change and Improvement . Since 2006 he has held academic positions at the Oslo University of Applied Sciences (name since August 2011: Oslo University / Akershus ). At first he worked at the center for multicultural and international work , later, among other things, in teacher training.

From 2000 to 2005 Gule was General Secretary of the Norwegian Humanist Association ( Human-Etisk Forbund , HEF). During this time and in several publications thereafter, he repeatedly accused totalitarian ideologies and religions. Among other things, he criticized the former Norwegian party AKP (now Rødt ), which was oriented towards Maoism and which at times exerted great influence on Norwegian intellectuals, for its contradicting human rights policy, which systematically ignored the " brutality of Stalin, the cruel absurdities of Mao and the genocide of Pol Pot " . Gule's repeated criticism of Islamic fundamentalism sparked debates in his home country; at the same time he defended the religious freedom of Muslims in Norway.

Gule maintained his critical and, in some cases, negative attitude towards the State of Israel . In an article published in 2006, he accused the country of pursuingracially discriminatory policies ” against the Palestinians. In it he distanced himself from UN General Assembly Resolution 3379 , which equated Zionism with racism, but found that the legislation and political practice in Israel express " that Palestinians are worth less than Jews ". Israel’s discriminatory politics evoke parts of the Palestinian and Arab hatred of Jews. He also took the view that criticism of Israel, unless it “identifies all Jews and Judaism with Israel ”, should in no way be equated with “ classic anti-Semitism ”. Gule also condemned " the assault, the oppression and the discrimination " in the Arab states and the Palestinian use of terror as a political tool.

Interviews on the 2011 attacks in Norway

In 2011, several Norwegian and foreign media outlets, including the British broadcaster BBC , interviewed Gule about the 2011 attacks in Norway . Regarding the political positions of the perpetrator Anders Behring Breivik , Gule said that many in Norway and across Europe would think like Breivik. Only his radical actions distinguish him from the others. He worried how long this inhibition threshold for radical action, which Breivik had exceeded, could be sustained. There are two explanations for Breivik's act, one psychological and one ideological: “ Psychiatrists have to give their diagnosis first, but one can say that we are dealing with a megalomaniac narcissus. Many have these facilities, why didn't he become an extreme mountaineer or top athlete like others? Because of his political interest and his ideological orientation, he found this action. The ideology gave the personality its direction . "
