geography

The municipality of Larsmo extends over hundreds of islands and skerries in the Gulf of Bothnia , the total coastline is around 500 km. The straits between the two main islands Larsmo and Eugmo and the mainland were closed by dams in 1962; the bay behind it was separated from the Baltic Sea and is now a freshwater lake, the Larsmosjön . With an area of 85 km² and a capacity of 213 million cubic meters, it is one of the largest artificial freshwater reservoirs in Finland. The so-called “Siebenbrückenstraße”, which connects Larsmo with the towns of Karleby in the north and Jakobstad in the south, runs over the dams.

history

The political municipality Larsmo exists since 1867. It maintains partnerships with the places Klæbu (Norway) and Malå (Sweden). The most important industry in Larsmo is boat building; several medium-sized companies in this branch have settled here.

Attractions

The wooden church of Larsmo was built by Jakob Rijf in 1787 . Also worth seeing is a memorial on the small island of Orrskär, which commemorates the SS John Grafton . This British steamboat was supposed to smuggle weapons into the country for the Finnish resistance movement during the Russian Revolution in 1905 , but then ran aground near Orrskär. With the help of the local population, the weapons were unloaded, the ship's crew blew up the ship and fled across the Baltic Sea to Sweden.
